Hi: I have a friend that is planing on assembling a Funk V8 engine into a Ford 8N to use for pulling at the antique tractor pulls. Is this considered standard? Did Ford have this for an option if you requested it? Our tractor pulls are suppose to be standard equipment. You can do some tinkering on them to improve the running, but when it is time to pull they have to be standard or original. What is you opion? Thanks! Bob

In regards to pulling with a Funk; A couple years ago I was at a pull where there was a really good m.c. or announcer who knew all tractors purty well and seemed to know the Funks as well. Anyway he really made the show entertaining and I told him so and then asked about pulling my Funk 6cyl. He said he would love to see it pull but would have to pull exhibition as a Funk is not considered a stock tractor.

Robert all funk v8 powered tractors were aftermarket conversions they were not a factory option.

Hi: I am back again. Just want to know what weight class my friend will be in with his Ford 8N when he assemblies that Funk V8 engine. Thanks!
Bob

Robert your friend might have some problems with his tractor at antique tractor pulls. First of all most antique tractor pulls require an OEM machine. Only factor options would be acceptable. Even liquid fill in the tires is taboo. As stated in the other post a Funk conversion is after market. There may be an open class of some kind that will allow modifications but that brings up a second issue. Weight, and therefore traction, and horsepower.

A standard N is a heavy machine for its horsepower. It usually falls in the next to lowest weight class (2500lbs). The next weight class is usually 3000, then 3500 and so on. I think a Funk N would be in the 3000 lb class. Traction is most often gained by adding weight. However in the same weight class as the Ns are machines with bigger engines (more hps). IE Farmall BN and AC C. If you go Funk mod. you add tons of HP but have a little tractor with not much weight. It will be outpulled by big machines.

However it would be a lot of fun building a Funk V8 then lining it up against machine 2 or 3 times its size, win or lose!

Good Luck!

Hi Snowplow: Thanks! You and the others have given me hope to go ahead and pull against him, if only I can get a couple of bugs out of my timing set-up. Thanks angin. Bob

Good luck!

Antique tractor pulling is sort of an odd duck. Assuming we can trust the owners not to cheat, the results are often somewhat predetermined, unless two identical machines are competing. Yes the skill of the driver does play a role but... However we can usually not trust the owners and the judges don't always bring out the fine tooth comb. The real fun of an antique tractor pull should be the fun of seeing how much each machine can pull not which machine can pull the most. A personal best sort of thing.

Enjoy it!

That,s easy to say if you have,nt been beat by one of those green & yellow things by 8'. I really enjoy those pulls & talking with tractor nuts of all colors because they are all American made.

Hi Dumb Logger: I have to agree with you. I like to see the old American tractors pull! Most all of us that pull, tinker and fine tune our machines. That is the fun of it, there are a lot of guys that don't do to much on the fine tuning, but after losing a few times, I will bet they pick up a few pointers. Thats what it is all about, getting involved, and learning. You are always going to have a few that cheat, but for the best part, if you are really fine tuned you will be hard to beat. My thinking! I hear you! Believe me I hear you!

As you mentioned the great part about antique tractor pulls is seeing American agricultural history in action. The development of the farm tractor is to a large extent an American venue.

For a great read on the history and development of the American tractor check out FARM TRACTOR Milestones by Randy Leffingwell.

Hi Snowplow: I don't know if I have Farm Tractor. I will check it out. My wife usually keeps me pretty well stocked up, knowing that I like tractors so well. She figures it is cheaper than me buying another tractor. Ha Ha I just bought another one to use as a work tractor. Bob
