I'm pricing tractors and trying to figure my best deal. (years unknown at this time)

8N w/ grader blade, boom, rake and rear scoop $3400 obo. of course it "runs good" "tight front end"

is it worth it?

9N with 8N motor, repainted (not well) new hydrolics, 12 volt kit. runs solid $2800

is it worth it?

8N engine gone through with seals (no leaks), repainted. new hydrolics. 4'bush hog. $3300

is it worth it?

How do I REALLY decide what is the most mechanically sound? what should I look for?

thanks, rob

If all the tractors ran well and checked OK. I would make an offer on the first one, then buy a bushog, if needed, used $200.00 plus or minus a little or a new one for $500.00 plus or minus.

Rob,

Go to John Smith's web page. He has a section on what to look for when buying a N. I don't have the URL here but I'm sure others will provide.

Take compression #'s, test drive and work a little, and maybe keep lookin'. IMO, the 1st sounds best. The implements are worth @ $475 easy in my area. HTH

Rob, I just sold 2 8n's. 1-52 8n rebuilt front to back new rubber battery and fresh paint for $3000. The second was a 48 8n a good restoring project: need tires a radiator had a 9n motor in it and needed sheet metal work and paint. This tractor ran threw an auction and brought $1425. And the 9n, I haven't seen one bring $2000 in tip top shape in I don't know how long. All in all it depends on what your willing to spend, what you intend to use the tractor for,and what you want for equipment for it. Good Luck John

I agree. Those prices are hopeful. The last one sounds like the best bet, but i'd still negotiate and do a test drive. Ebay has been my research tool lately, and 8N's seem to go for 2000-2600 in good shape, and of course less $ in bad shape. 9N's almost always under $2000 unless loaded with about 12 attachments. Maybe print out a few auctions that have ended so you can use their final price as a bargaining chip? Just a thought.
