a couple of days ago i got a call from my neighbour. she was in a panic..she and her boyfriend decided to go for a nice nature walk. to get to the trail, they had go down a hill and park.
the weather here has been nice and warm, about +15c. we have had LOTS of snow. the combination caused this hill to become really muddy.
i will use any excuse to use the 48, at least that is what the wife tells me.
down the road i go. its about a mile and a half.
when i reach the hill, there is a nice new kabota sitting there. the owner is at my buddys vehickle. i walk over and see what is up.
THIS IS WHERE I START TO LOOSE IT...
that city slicken, yupee, wana be farmer,[you know the type, $30,000 tractor to play with on 2 acres on weekends when he drives up from the city....grrrrr ] wanted $150 to pull him out. after a few choice words, i told him, he best get back up the hill and park the tractor and his selfish additude back in the barn. i was so pumped by this time, i think i could have pulled him out with out the tractor...lol
i want down, hooked up the chain and pulled him right to the top of the hill in about 10 minutes.
he kept trying to give me money...i told him i didnt want the money, thats what GOOD neighbours do.
by the time i got home, the flag was up for mail.
inside the box was a bottle of home made red wine and a $50 bill.
i was pretty impressed....

Dale,

I have a like situtation at a road that intersects our road across from our driveway, it's something less than 90 degrees and it's amazing over the years how many people I've pulled out, never charging for it and at some of the lousiest hours of the morning. It's always amazed me how many, who get you out of bed at 2 or 3 in the morning, never offer to pay.

I haven't and wouldn't charge, but it is nice to hear the offer. Sounds like you not only have a good neighbor, but have made a friend as well.

Mike

Dale, I sell those 30,000 Kubotas(actually ya gotta try pretty hard to spend 30...usually more in the 15-22k range) and thank goodness there are alot of those guys around (the kind that buy 'em, not the kind that want money to help their neighbor!) or my wallet would be unhappy! ...but we own 10 or 11 oldies, and here on our Rd in snowy Upstate, NY, we pull a few out every winter, when the N's won't do it, we usually skip right up to the JD 70, not much will back her up! Keep chuggin'! Pete

Great story. Here's a flip side. I've pulled more than one vacationer out of a snowbank here in Vermont, but this winter my 8Ns in the garage getting a restoration. Road conditions were pretty bad a few weeks ago when I drove into town. Coming around a steep downhill curve I saw a hole in the snowbank and what looked like a big black box sticking out of the woods. Much to my surprise it was a brand new Hummer. I stopped and offered to help. The couple (she never got out of the truck) was not happy. I went back home, grabbed a chain and shovel, borrowed a neighbor's Kobota and, after a fair amount of work, got him out. I got nothing - no help, and no thanks. He just got back in his toy and drove off. I wasn't looking for anything but a thank you would have been nice. I hope the next time he gets that Hummer stuck it takes a Proctologist to pull it out.

my 41 did 12 (small) driveways in four hours, counting the 'neighborin' I did between jobs. Turned out one neighbor knew of a single mom with three kids, so hers was #12. he tried to pay me $20.00, and after we disagreed, he threw $5 out the window and drove away, yelling 'does it run on gas or diesel?'. Snow is GOOD tractor time.

And it is especially nice to see that a 55 year old tractor with less bells N' whistles than the new one did the job just fine!

Mighty neighborly.
I agree with your wife. I had to keep telling my neighbors NOT to shovel snow by hand. I'd be there to help out. Heck, that's what trac.., er neighbors are for.
