I posted this on a jeep board but got no response and know that some of you enjoy off topic stuff and someone out there probably owns one of these. The vehicle is a 1996 Jeep grand Cherokee. The problem is the battery drains completely after 5-6 days of non use. I'm not leaving any lights on and the battery is new and will recharge on the charger. I stumbled upon this bulletin: This condition may be caused by a mis-communication between the Body control module and the Door Module. Normal ignition off draw is less than 25 milliamperes. This condition will prevent the Body Control Module from powering down. If the condition is present the vehicle will require the installation of a revised Body control module. Has anyone experienced this condition or have any other ideas relative to the draining. My jeep book does not provide the location of the module. Does anyone know where it is and difficulty in changing it out? After all I need the jeep to visit the 8N which misses me terribly.

Sure do appreciate the responses.
Simonmeridew-My relays are wacky to, they make clicking sounds also. Read on the jeep board that these creatures, at least the 1996 was an electrical nightmare plagued with bugs. The battery is 2 months old and I had taken it back and had it tested when the problem began. It is a new battery that I recharge every time it happens.

9NJoe- thankyou thats something I can do fairly easily, will try.

Hobo-Thks for the location. you sound like you work for a dealer. I agree you won't get fat off of .03 hrs. Is that 3min or 30 min? or 20min? I personally have a bad feeling about my dealer based on past experiences. I like to be armed with some knowledge prior to making an appt. which by the way can take several weeks along with all the other headaches associated with getting there and back home.

and Dell thks again.

Behind lower left side of dash. Thats the best I can get out of mitchel on demand. I read TSB and it sounds like your problem. labor time to replace body controll mod. is a BIG .03hr. Not going to get fat off of that. IF you get to the point of replacing the BCM it would be best to take it to a dealer. The BCM and the engine controller (ECM) like to talk to each other and when they don't see eye to eye the ecm will shut down the system. Guess what now you need a ECM and BCM now hears weres I get fat if you replace the BCM and they don't get along. Don't even think about a used one. Have herd it may cause even bigger problem.

Thanks Dell, I new you would read an electrical post. You can eat off of the battery connections and they are clean and bright. The alternator should not be an issue since I am not driving the vehicle in an effort to isolate the problem. I put a freshly fully charged battery in there and in 5-6 days its dead. This never happened until I started driving another vehicle and left this one unused, it then came to the forefront. 25 milliamperes is the normal draw when not in use if the module is working properly. 180 milliamperes is the draw in operating mode. Although a chase it is, it is an informed chase since this is a known problem with a service bulletin issued. It seems logical at least and it is my best lead. I am however to cheap to pay a dealer for guesswork which may or may not correct the problem. I thought if someone knew where this gadget was located, the body control module, i could at least inspect the connections. I'm a novice electrician but changing a component seems straightforward once the beast is found.

ratface:
a couple of comments: I'm not sure what the body control modules are, but I have a 1998 GC and every time I use something electrical like the lights, or open a door, turn indicators wipers etc there is an accompanying "click" of a relay sort of behind the glove compartment under the dash; I always thought and still do that the electrical system in the Jeep uses a whole bunch of relays to control the various systems. They may be plug-in type units, and maybe you have one stuck on. I'd start looking under the dash near the glove box.
Second comment: in your first post you said battery was "new" and in the second post you said battery was "fully charged". Big difference!! A battery can appear to take a charge by showing a taper down on the battery charger ammeter and yet have a bad cell and thus have barely enough power to get out of its own way. I'd do a hydrometer test on each cell of the battery before I started pulling relays out of an under the dashboard circuit board. I bought a new Diehard at Sears 5 years ago that had a bad cell. Had to return it in a couple of days. You never know.

Ratface,

Turn off your car.
Open the fuse box
Remove all the fuses one at a time
Put a test light across where the fuse was
If the light lights, you have found the circuit that is draining the battery.

ratface..... ....I'm NOT a Jeep expert..... but..... a 25ma drain on a 12 volt battery ought to take 6 months.

Give the rest of your electrical system a clean bill of health FIRST before you go trying to find an "obscure" electrical part problem. I'd take the Jeeps alternator in for a "free" check at local autoparts store. I'd "neutralize" with baking soda and wash the top of the battery off any evaporized battery acid that can get boiled out by overcharging from bad alternator..... ..Dell
