The timing screw on my dist. is at the bottom of its travel, but I can't get the timing measurement down to 1/4". About 5/16" is the best I can do.Is this critcal? And if so how can fix it.I have new points and the dist. cam doesn't appear worn.I rechecked everything several times, same result. The condencer screw is close to not being under the coil spring already,so I don't see how I could rotate farther. Can the stationary side of the points be adjusted(bent)to open a little sooner?

I was taught "always" set your timing first, then points gap..... ...Dell

I just replaced a 3 week old set of points that I purchased from TSC with a new set purchased from NAPA. It seemed that the points purchased from TSC had my 1/4 inch timing screw about in the middle of the range. When I installed the NAPA points I had to move the timing screw all the way to the bottom of the range to obtain the 1/4 inch. Maybe there is some differences in the manufacturing tolerances of the different brands??

Most likely, the springs on the advance weights are worn down and or the rivets holding the weights are loose. Check this assembly... A new assembly is about $ 65.00....

From your serial number, you have a front mount dist correct? If not, disregard below.

5/16" oughtta work. Just gap the points at .015" and do NOT bend stationary side (will cause eccentric contact if you do). If it runs fine under load don't worry. Maybe after 10 or so hours of run time you can look at the dist cap and see where the spark is arcing from rotor to dist contacts. If "burned" part of dist contacts is only in the corner and sides, chances are engine performance is not up to par.

I have only about 1/2 contact on my 8N-B (side mount) mainly due to poor aftermarket parts. The contacts simply aren't in the proper place, but I have good performance nonetheless. Could be the aftermarket dist caps for front-mounts are better. Perhaps some fellow Members will comment furher about their experience...
