we are assembling an engine that has been apart before and some con rods have been replaced.i understand that the notch on the top of the piston must point forward but do not know if the oil squirt holes in the rods should be at front or rear, also should the retaining notches on the bearing inserts be on the camshaft side or away from camshaft.any advice would be appreciated.thanks,roy.

When installing the rods and the numbers are not legable always have the rod bearing inserts with the retainer tabs on the left side of the engine.
Or away from the camshaft.

Roy, The Book says to install the rods with the numbered side towards the cam. The oil squirt hole can be in either direction. Tighten the rod nuts to 35-40 foot pounds. Did you install new bushings in the top of the rods for the piston pins?? If so, did you have any trouble with them being too big (outside diameter)? I just had new piston pin bushings from FNH installed in my 8N rods, and the bushings were .020 too big OD. They had to be turned down before being pressed in the rods. Cost me $150.00. OUCH!!!! The machinist had to make a mandrel to turn them on, and of course charged me for that too. Good luck!!!
