ok, this is what has happened since last post.re-checked everything from carb to coil.geting gas and lots of spark.still just back fireing from exhaust.tried pulling tractor around neighbor hood.still no start.this morning i pulled the head and brought no1 to tdc on compression stroke.both valves were closed and no4 exhaust was just closeing and intake just starting to open up.as far as i know, that is how it is supposed to be.timeing marks are 4 teeth apart from being lined up and rotor button is positoined just past no2 on dist cap with points open.question is,is my cam and or crank gear out of time or what?should the rotor be in this position when no1 is at tdc??this is a brand new engine with adjustable valves and i really need some help to at least to get her to fire up.so any help you fellas can give me would be greatly appreciated.thanks in advance

By his post I think he has his cam set right. He needs to get his distributor rotor lined up with #1 at the cap. Does anyone have a answer to that problem. are some advice. How about the valves are you sure they are seated.

dial that sucker in. dial your cam in. this will take all the doubt out.dialing it in will allow you to get everything dead on. i prefer not to use the plastic dials, just the metal ones. just a thought. be safe. rick craig

Roger, I had the same problem after rebuilding my 51 model 8n. It would just pop through the exhaust and not catch. To make a long story short, my manifold was leaking. I had to use two sets of manifold gaskets coated with grease to get it sealed off and it now runs great. Hope this helps.

It sounds like your cam and gear are dead on. As for the rotor it should be at are very close to #1 post of cap.I would like to see the rotor at #1 and the points have just open. This would have the timming alittle advanced. Don't know how to set up or adjust a front mount dist. i have not worked on one yet. Maybe some one will jump in and help you with that. I remember you saying you had 70psi compression. Thats to low. While you got the head off you need to check the valves for leakage. pour some gas or fuel oil or varsol around the valve from the top with both valves closed wile piston is at TDC on compression stroke. Their should be no leakage. It would be best done with the manifold off so you could look inside the ports. If you see any fluid leaking around or down the valve you will need to reseat them. I like to give it five min. and if no leakage you are good to go. I grind all my own valves and always hand lap them in. I have been bit by this because I though I was so good at it I did not need to lap them in. A few weeks ago when I helped Jim,NC rebuild his motor he had paid to have the valve seats installed and ground. I though we had better check them. None would seat so we reground and hand laped all of them. Now for my last test as I know you have worked hard at this. Leave the head off and install the dist. Now with the switch on turn the motor over to #1 TDC. You should get a spark at TDC at #1 plug wire. go threw all cylinders at thi time. 1-2-4-3.
