Hi I need some help. 51 8n. changed Regulator cause cutout contacts were stickin and causing discharge. Polarized new Regulator like Dell says.
started it up. It now does not discharge but it don't charge either, amp meter stays in the middle.
Battery slowly discharges when running .Checked volt output on big stud on Gen back plate and ground, get nothing. can the polarity (
If I did it wrong)effect the generator output??
I'm getting real confused
thanks for any help

Bob: This is how I polarize a late 8N generator. I jump the ARM and BATT connections just like Dell said, but I GROUND the 'F' terminal on the generator FIRST. I can polarize them on the bench, just touching a battery neg to the output terminal, and the battery pos to the field terminal. You can to it with jumper cables. Your VREG should do this anyway when the voltage is low, but try it just in case. According to the fine folds here at the home of the forum you want an 8N10505C higher current that the 10505B, but still 6V pos grd 'A' circuit
good luck

Thanks Jim. The part # you stated is the one they sent me. I will try the polarize method you mentioned

BOB..... ...check your voltage regulator wiring....AGAIN....won't be the first time and it won't be the last time that a voltage regulator has been miss-wired.

Voltage regulator should have faintly stampped terminal letterings of FLD, ARM, BATT, ground is usually not marked. GND should be thin BLK wire w/RED tracer. FLD should be thin BLK wire w/WHT tracer. ARM should be heavy YEL wire w/BLK tracer. BATT should be heavy YEL wire with NO TRACER to terminal block.

Once you've got your voltage regulator wiring straightend out, re-polarize AGAIN. Briefly "sparkle" your BATT and ARM terminals with screwdriver tip (BATT and ARM terminals are side-by-side)..... ....Dell

Any possibility your new regulator may be the wrong circuit type ( a circuit / b circuit ).

Were the original genny's a-circuit? I know mine is b-circuit.. but it has been rebuilt, and I am using the regulator the rebuild shop provided with it.

Bob..... ....8N voltage regulator 8N-10505-C has superceeded all others and is the ONE to use IF you have any of the OEM N-Generators. And since you are unable to verify your generator, all betts are off.

Since you now supply additional voltage regulator information in the form of "non-standard" VR terminal location labeling. Your new VR terminal location description is consistant with my knowledge of VR p/n 8N-10505-C. I haven't got a clue as to what you do have.

Since your OLD voltage regulator was apparently working at one time, take your OLD voltage regulator into a good autoparts store and put it on the counter and tell'em you want one of these . Lettem earn their money..... ....Dell
