Low oil pressure....

Hello
I bought a 9n last year and used it all summer-for the most part the oil pressure was occasionally up to 40 but usually around 25.
This winter I started fixing a few things..
Changed the oil, put in 10w-30 and a fram filter. I put a new ignition coil on and just yesterday I put a new distributer and points in-this seems to have corrected my major problem, which was that it wouldn't start once warm. But driving it last night and today the pressure at starting was around 40, and eventually it dropped off to nearly 0. Is there something I have done wrong that would make it suddenly lose its pressure??

This is my first tractor and I am not the most mechanic intelligent!

thanks for any help

Thanks for the replys.
I will buy a different filter and will also change to the heavier oil and go from there. Unfortunately, I only get time to do this on weekends...and this weekend I have to go to Canada.
Anyways, I will let you know how it goes based on all the advice given.
Again, thank you all for your help!

Put in 30 weight oil. 10w-30 is very light.
The 20# pressure you had is GOOD! Don't worry about that. If you were using a non-detergent oil before remember with detergent oil it must be changed more often. Check the Owners Manual.
The filter is a bypass filter so it shouldn't lower your pressure. If it doesn't come up with 30 weight oil I would check the oil pressure releif valve on the front of the engine and the oil pickup tube in the oil pan for looseness or a leak. Quite low pressure at idle is normal for older engines and poses no problem as long as it is at least 5# when hot.

check the oil filter and make sure that it hasnt collapsed internally. fram filters are notorius for this. take one apart and you'll see why. get a WIX filter. not knockin what you use, but fram's are poorly built filters and do collaps. hope this helps.be safe. rick craig

Got the oil changed, put in a different filter that a tractor place recommended. With that rubber washer on the top of the oil canister, I could not get the oil to stop oozing out the top when the tractor was running. The irony of it all is that I ended up using the Fram oil ring, because that was a tad bigger than the 'better' oil filter's ring. I will get a chance to try her tonight to see if that has helped!!!

Thanks for the help.

The N's use a oil bypass system. The filter really has nothing to do with oil pressure. Only about 15% of the circulating oil actually goes through the filter.

Did you change the oil weight. You say you put in 10w/30. If it's an older engine with more than just a few hours on it, you probably need to be using a heavier oil. If your pressure drops with temperature, that would be a good indication. the 30 wt oil is just not thick enough to stay where you're pumping it.

These old N's are known to do wuite well with "low" pressures, but nearly zero makes me nervous. If ya don't want to change the oil, stick in a can of STP. That's got viscosity improvers and just might help ya out for now.
