My 50 8n will not start after running fine for 3 montht after for some reason the points burnt. Now no spark at any of the plug wires and no voltage at the coil lead. The points appear fine and get good readings at the starter terminal. Does this point to replacing the resistor? or am I off base. Any help appreciated.

put your meter on ohms(U) and place a lead on either side of the ballast resistor. if nothing reads change the resistor. i know this because the same thing happened to me. i changed the resistor and my tractor started right up.
good luck

Since you apparently have a voltmeter, and since you cleverly neglect to specify whether your tractor is still the OEM 6 volt system or whether its been converted to 12 volts .....OR..... wheather your ignition system is the square OEM frontmount system or the roundcan sidemount ignition..... .. and since you refer to a resistor, follow the voltage.

Measure from one side of the resistor to ground, then measure from other side of resistor to ground. If you don't measure voltage on the ignition coil side of the resistor, its a pretty good bet that your resistor is bad ..... BUT..... if you don't read battery voltage on the OTHER side of the resistor, then most likely your resistor is good. Follow the voltage..... ....respectfully, Dell
