I know everyone here has interest in n series, me too, I am keeping mine and my son wont let me get rid of the 39 either, he wants me to rebuild it, he is only 10, so I will respect his wishes and maybe keep another tractor and generation into the collecting and using phase. My question is there a site out there that will tell me and show me the different sizes and #'s of ford tractors that are bigger and newer than the N's and the older tractors, I am going to get and need a 40-50 hp tractor, like the size of a 2810 or so,probaly like 7 - 15 yrs old, and saw somewhere a diagram of all the different newer size tractors but can not for the life of me find it, I dont want to buy new new, but want to get something i can put right in the field and not have to tinker much on,, reliable with out going broke,, there are a couple auctions coming up soon, so I am starting to look, thansk any help would be appreciated.'pat

Sounds like you may want a ford 4000

something like 55 engine hp / 46 pto hp.

I think they go back into the 60's.. maybee 1964.

I've seen deisel as well, on the newer ones.

The ford 3000 is just a bit smaller.. around 38 pto hp.

These are real good machines too.. ford 3000' come and go around here alot for people doing tractor /landscaping work... a 3000 holds a fel well. There are a couple local tractor shop theat rebuild a few ford 3000's a year.. one guy just does the engin/tranny/hyd/tires.. no sheet metal.. sells em for about 5500.. the other guy does top to bottom.. looks like a new tractor for 6500.

4000's are a bit rarer around here.

I owned two English 4000's with diesel and independent PTO. Other than the height and size problem (too tall for hogging near the tree line, and too large to tow behind a 1/2 ton pickup...) They have been the best utility tractors I have owned. And when I sold them I got way less than a comparably equipped 3000 would have gotten. Front axles were tough, with a nice heavy cast bolster that wasn't an accident waiting to happen like the hundred series sheet steel one. i wouldn't hesitate to grab another if I was in the market. They are a classic, basic, quality machine.

What is the weight on the 4000's? Are you sure they are too big to tow on a 1/2 ton truck? Not specificall ydisagreeing with you.. but seems that they can't weight that much can they?

Lots of vehicles are quoting 10-12k... New yukon quotes 12k.

I'm fairly certain my dodge would handle a 4000 on a tandem trailer with brakes especially if I used the gooseneck instead of the ball/hitch,, Though I havn't tried pulling over about 7k - 7.5k... between my NH 1920, disc, and pasture drag plus the tandem 16' trailers weight.

Opinions on this?

It was just slightly too much to tow on my bumper pull 7000 lb GVW landscape trailer. I'd be a whole lot more comfortable with a bigger truck. I did tow it a few times but real short distances and low speeds. Sure a gooseneck would have made it fine. Someday I'll own one.

The weight wasn't the only problem for towing. The center of gravity is pretty high. (at least on my English one with the tall rubber.)

I understand what you are saying now... Many htings together made it difficult.. the tall rubber, and a landscape trailer.

Luckilly I got myself a car hauler.. and it sets real low.. ( almost too low.. ) but pulls great.

Good luck!

Here's a link to the Vintage Ford Tractor Resource Site. I just clicked over there and a lot of the links aren't working but there's still a bunch of good info for you to look at on Fords up through 1964.
