Replacing radiator project

Hello-
I am about to replace my radiator and I have two questions.
Firstly, do I need to remove my hood to replace the radiator? Are there only 2 bolts at the bottom to remove?

Secondly, since I have the radiator out and everything torn apart, should I put a temperature gauge in the hose? They are around 25$, and I am wondering if it would help at all. If I should, then does anyone know what a 'normal' temperature should be on it?

Thanks for any help.

While the cooling system is apart would be a good time to make sure the block is clean inside. If the block is full of crud a new radiator is not going to help cooling much; Of course it may stop leaks. Like Dell says, put a T-stat in.

YES, you MUST remove your N-Hood to replace your N-Radiator. 6-bolts. tip: DRAIN YOUR GAS TANK FIRST, then have a helper help you walk the hood foward over the radiator. Its not heavy (without gas) but just awkward.

You don't need a water temp gauge on N-Tractors but you can if you want to, N-Radiators are OVERSIZED. Not difficult to install one in the upper radiator hose if'n yer clever.

BE MORE CLEVER, install a 160* thermosat in engine end of upper radiator hose. Engine will run better and oil contaminates will be heated up and evaporated and you won't get gunked up oil in oilpan..... ...Dell

I found a standard temp gauge for the tractor at the fleet farm store. It says 'complete assembly with bracket and adapters. Install in block head, or hose. Dial calibrate to 250* extra long 70" capillary line. Fits all liquid cooled engines.'

Is this what you were talking about, will this one work great, or is there a different one I should be looking for.

Becareful when you are moving the hood not to bump the fuel bowl assembly. I use a pair of saw horses, and set the hood on top with the bowl in the middle.

Now is a good time to replace clamps and hoses too.

I had a hard time getting my new radiator to fit. The neck on the not was just a hair shorter than the original and required some minor modification. I also had some problems with the fan shroud but once again some minor modifications...
