What are limiter chains? How do they work? Can I make them myself? Anyone got a picture I can look at so I can get an idea? Thanks again for all your help!

See the link below and you won't need limiter chains for the lift to stay where you put it.

I see them on ebay every now and then for $24.99, so I made a set and had that much in them, at least I saved on shipping, you need a huge drill bit for the holes. HTH Buckeye

Rob,

I made a set for my tractor. I can't find the file I have on it right now, but if you email me, I should be able to locate the file later and forward it.

Rob,

Limiter chains, as Ed said, run from the top link pin to (normally) the lower lift arm pins. They stop the downward travel of the lift arms for such things as a bush hog or, in my case, a chipper/shredder. I found that there is often not enough room for the tab to slip over the lower lift arm pins, since I usually use stabilizer arms on my implements. Here's what I did:

The linch pin hlders on my lower lift arms were squashed beyond repair. I keep a set of linch pins in each implement anyway, so I ground/drilled out the rivets for the holders and fabricated a set of tabs about 1-1/2" wide X 1-1/2" tall and drilled 1/4" holes in them to match the holes in the lift arms. The tabs stick above the lift arms, so I drilled a 3/8" hole near the top center of each tab. Now, I have a place to fasten the chains. I use a small clevis with a hairpin clip on the pin so that it is easy to remove (hairpin replaced a cotter). It's much easier it adjust and remove than the old way.

HTH

Ron

limiter chains run from the center top link of the three point hitch to the far ends of the lower lift arms.

you can find kits at places like TSC
