I see the gear oil thing has come up again for the umpteenth time.In a way, GOOD!. I'm still not clear on whether or not my tranny must be drained a refilled. Money's a nuisance , but getting rid of five gallons of oil is a problem. Anyhow some questions come to mind, I bought Cam 2 Gear oil before I knew anything about the uniqueness of N tractors. In my last Ford van, a 1988 E150, I had a Mazda 5 speed standard tranny that went bad on me so I had it rebuilt. I didn't follow the Ford specs and use ATF, I used a heavier gear oil. Makes sense don't it ? Well the heavier oil ate up the trans and I had to go for a rebuilt. I know from first hand experience that the wrong oil can wreck a trans, even a modern one.
Tonight I went out and checked the can that the Cam2 came in and it says 80W90 GL4/GL5 And not a lot more. Am I in trouble? The can also says that it was 35 LBS. Not 5 gallons. What is the weight of gear oil? Is 35 lbs, 5 gals? If not, what is it? If I do have to take it out over some additive, should I flush the housings to get ever last trace of it out as not to contaminate the new oil? Thanks in advnce, Rich

There is only one oil recommeded by Ford. Try to find it, or your tractor won't work right! Not the thin stuff that they are trying to get us to use these days! That just makes leaks! Some Oil depots still carry the proper stuff, just look around. As far as getting rid of excess petroleum products..I find they are great for starting bon-fires! Do what you must, but remember...Change Is Bad!!

Rich, Just use the Ford spec. 134 and forget it.Also here in Ga,all the major auto parts chains recycle used oil, although they they don't advertise it.So ask you local store, they probable do too.

Rich: Yesterday AM the same question, kinda was here. Indications were the bronze is vulnerable to the GL5. There's a link to a thread Llamas wrote on there. Good info. Prentice in Tn

Cam 2 has a EP90 made for N fords. The light weight tractor fluids are not made for this model. Go to where purchased Cam 2, they should have it. If you have a farm coop, Tractor Supply or Farm Store, they should care.

The original specification GL-1 is still available. I get mine from Advance Auto Parts here in Pennsylvania. They carry it in 5 gal pails. As for getting rid of used oil, see if your county has a recycling point somewhere. I can get rid of up to 5 gal at a single trip to my site and a lot of other stuff too. Good luck

OLD BEDFORD VILLAGE is always a favorite stopping place. Might do some volunteer work there, later.

on this board i ve heard somebody say dont use some kind of oil b/c it has side effects. i dont know if this is the same as what you were using. I use GL-1 in my tractor that can be purched at some walmarts (not all carry it)for $20 - $30.

hope this will help..... .John

Getting rid of 5 gallons should not be a problem. The EPA says that hydraulic and transmission fluids are treated the same as motor oil. Find a place that recycles motor oil and they will take the tranny fluid.

I'd change it out. What to do with the used oil is a problem. Take it to an oil change place. They'll dispose of it for you (for a small fee).

35# of oil is not 5 gallons. Aviation fuel weighs about 7# per gal. Automobile gasoline weighs just slightly more—still about 7# / gal. Oil is a bit heavier (that's why it settles to the bottom of your 2 stroke mix and needs to be shaken in the can before adding it to your chainsaw, weedeater, and etc—and shake yur equipment a bit if it's been settin around for 6 months). I don't have the specific gravity of each fluid directly at hand but 35# of gear oil ain't 5 gallons. Just fill the tranny to the observation hole and you'll have it right.

Do ya need to flush out every speck of the GL5 stuff. Wouldn't hurt, but there's probably not enuf of it in there (after the the change) ta make much difference.

Sounds to me like your worried a lot over nothing , I would say most old Ns are still running 80 90 oil in the trany with no problems, however on the next change go with that newer 234d stuff that they sell at New Holland Dealers it is said to be more trany friendly. Still running 80 90 in mine with no problem, That newer thinner stuff may cause leaks where you dont have leaks now .
