We are working on a tractor that we believe to be a 9N, 1939 or 1941, we don't know. According to the serial number, it is a 1941 but the owner swears that it is a 1939. What is the main difference besides the grille and if it is not an aluminum grille and does not have the Ford-Ferguson insignia on the hood, what does that make it? Please help! We really need to know what this in order to get parts. Thanks!!!!

Serial number stamped above and to the left of the starter motor on the motor block ill tell you waht year. It should read *9N _ _ _ _ or _ * post that number and we can tell you more, and what was original to the 39, 40, 0r 41 9N's.

Nonetheless, parts are available and all interchange from all kinds of parts OEM, NOS, salvaged, and you name it. And depending on what you want to do...make it work, show it, rebuild it back to original, or paint it like a zebra or camouflage or worse yet green and yellow. All depends on what you want to do. But not to worry getting parts is not all that difficult.

A '39 9n would have an aluminum dash
aluminum transmission cover
aluminum hood
aluminum grill
snap in battery cover (not hinged)
Hydraulic dip stick in trans cover near hydraulic fill plug
Grease fittings on the front of the front spindles.
Starter button on dash -- they moved it to the trans cover in early '40
The '39's came with smooth rear hubs but they had
a high failure rate so many of them were replaced
with a riveted center. So that is not a very good
indication of year. ( my '40 still has the smooth hubs!)
The cast aluminum hoods and grills tended to break
and were replaced with steel ones so having a steel hood or grill does not mean that your N is not a '39.

My '40 9n has no casting codes anywhere.

Patricia:

John Smith has some very good information for indentifying your N series tractor with photos of items to locate. I've given the link below.

On that page is a picture of a 1939 9N. Your serial number is you best bet, but if your tractor has been rebuilt, you may have a different year engine mated with a different year rear end.

Good luck.

First welcome to the wonderful world of n series and this board.

Second, the factory identifier for model year is the engine serial number. It will be faintly hand stamped on a boss below the head between the oil filter housing and the starter. Frequently very hard to read. 1939 first serial is 9N1;
40 first number would be 9N 10234. 41 would start with 9N 45976.

There is also a code stamped above the starter which should give you an engine build date. First letter is a month code A=January etc. then day of the month then one digit for year.

Here is the hang up==on a sixty year old tractor the engine could have been replaced. On the other hand very few 9N parts are year specific.

More than you wanted to know==right?

Your mileage may vary

Shouldn't make any difference as far as parts go.
Maybe only grill or steering wheel, as far as I know.

Hope this helps. :})
