I resorted to the installation of a shorter belt to pull the alternator up a little higher on the bracket. That fixed the problem easy enough. Didn't consider the center king pin problem though...that's a good suggestion.

Hilltopper has a good probability. Also look at the "alternator" factor. Is the alternator hanging out farther than the generator did? ray

Your center king pin is worn and you can weld up the stop boss to keep the axle from hitting the alternator or distributor cap.

Are there any grease fittings around the center king pin? Looked and cannot find any. If there are none should this be lubricated? How? Any other maintenance required?

Thanks.

I believe folks here will tell you not to lub the axle bushing. My guess is that dirt will get in there and eat up the bushing faster with lub than without. I believe the 9N/2N axle bushings came with an oil hole and the 8N bushings had no hole. Go figure.

Tyler, it seems possible the Ford engineers arrived at the same conclusion you did, and left off the oil hole on the later axle pin design. BTW, when I refurbished my 9N front end, I could not get a new (early style) pin, so I turned the old one upside down. This plus a new bushing took out most of the looseness. I may install a grease fitting if I ever tear it down again. Then hopefully the grease could push out the crud & grit.
