Anyone from western Montana? The wife just got a very attractive job offer and we are considering a
wild and crazy change. Things like cost of living
and real estate prices? Thanks

Ya don't have to worry about any Southern folks wanting to move out there. Y'all keep the South green, bring your Yankee dollars.

My $0.02 worth. Montana is one of the most beautiful states in the lower 48 but is also one of the most tax-unfriendly! It is NOT all flat, western part is very mountainous and there are no prettier mountains than in Glacier NP or the Missions. Browing is near (or in?) the Blackfeet Indian Reservation and therein you have the associated problems with Native Americans who have been psychologically and economically affected by the way they have been treated. Compared to metropolitan areas, the people are quite friendly. I have working in various places in Montana since 1962 and plan on retiring to Red Lodge this summer so that should tell you how I feel about it. Like any place there are pros and cons. If you like the wide open spaces, low humidity, mountains, big sky, long winters, and plains, few people, then it is a great place to be.

The area of our proposed move is Browning. She was
offered a teaching job there. We were through there in 2000 on our journey to Alaska. The Glacier Nat'l park is very close. It is as beautiful as anything in Alaska. Since she/we are
in late 40's we may wait four years until we retire and then go.

Montana is the fourth biggest state so lots of different geography.

Big selling T shirt a couple of summers ago in Bozeman--"Montana sucks, call home and tell your friends"

We have ticks the size of silver dollars that have to be surgically removed. Bears are coming down out of Yellowstone and carrying off small children. There is a new strain of metal eating beaver that will chew right through the door of your pickup to get to your leg.

No sales tax. Eleven percent income tax. Heavy duty property tax in most places. On the other hand the legislature is in session so anything can happen.

Your mileage may vary

I've been in and worked in Great Falls. Only place in Montana I am familar with.
My home field office is in Detroit. The cost of living % diff is 13% less there. Other features of Montana make it 95% better than Detroit.
It is flat. We used to say you could fire a bullet in any direction NSEW
and it would just get tired and fall to the ground to rest, before it hit anything.

Lucky you. We have been looking for work out there for two years. Can't swing the $7/hr stuff they're talking. Thats for experienced machinists, no benefits and IF you are lucky, 40hr/week. Kalispell and Whitefish were (we thought) about the same price on property and taxes as here in the piedmont of NC. Central and eastern Montana seems to have some pretty attractive property prices but it SURE IS FLAT!!!
