I have a 8n with front mount Coil. I ordered a kit to convert it. I removed the generator and the old wiring. I followed the instructions for the new kit and all went well. I did purchase a new 12 volt starter and battery. It will not turn over. It is like it has no power. I check the wiring again to make sure it was right. The new altenator has a 2 prong spade connection that is not used with this kit. I did go down to my auto parts store to get a 12 volt starter switch (the item that sits on top of the starter)So as far as I know it should turn over but it will not. Any ideas

Rick if you look in (n) archives you will find a wiring diagram for the 12V conversion. Dont rember where I found it but I printed out a digram last week for the (n) series. Good luck.

Hey Rick
I have a 1949 8N Ford.
Also wanting to change over to 12 volt.
Could you e-mail me the info where you got your kit.
Thanks Ron.....

A couple more thoughts:

If your 12 volt starter uses the same housing as the 6 volt original, there is no reason you shouldn't use the original solenoid and switch button (by the gear shift). That will give you the safety of the neutral start feature.
Alternately, you could probably mount the solenoid remotely with a short battery cable with the same results, if it won't attach directly to the starter.

You can improve the perfomance of your charging system by adding a short wire from the alternator output terminal to one of the two spade terminals you mentioned and a wire to the other spade terminal from a switched 12 volt source. The second wire must have a diode (directional) or marker light in the circuit. I forget which wire goes to which spade terminal. I can look it up if you need to know.
That is what I did with mine and it starts charging right away instead of having to over-rev a cold engine to get it charging.

When you hook up a hot to close solenoid you will essentially defeat the neutral interlock and allow it to start in gear. Fine by me since it is you tractor but don't claim anybody here told you to do that when you run over that blond haired blue eyed girl child and the lawyers start to circle.

Your mileage may vary

you might try what mountainman said, with this in mind. there are 'four wire' solenoids avalable too. tie one side of the coil to HOT, and the other side to your starter switch coming off the tranny (finds ground). then your solenoid/relay coil would energize, and you would get cranking.
good luck

Since most folks don't change the starter when they convert to 12 volts that throws a bit of mystery into it. The original 8N starter switch operates by grounding the small terminal in order to connect the larger two. Most 12 volt starters use a switch that requires applied power to operate the starter.

I am just finishing off a complete rebuild of a 9N
and am doing the 12 Volt conversion BUT I can't find a wiring drawing shows the complete system. I realize we are reversing from Positive ground to Negative but there has got to be a sketch somewhere??? Any Ideas

I think your best bet on a wiring diagram would be the archives. I have no idea what to key in though. There was a good one posted not long ago for the 9/2N 12 volt system.

I have an 8N and it is slightly different. I ended up making my own diagram (long before I found this forum) and wired it accordingly.

Whether you use a 6 volt coil or a 12 volt coil (front mount) determines which resistor system you should use.
