On my 9n the lift raises up and stays up when clutch is released and pto is on,and wont let down with control. When I bought the tractor the pto shaft seal was leaking and there was no fluid,i changed the seal, but never checked the lift before. The control seen to let the lift down only a inch or 2,and control arm seems very loose.Whats the problem.HELP!!

Another, better versed member may be able to zero in but my guess is that the issue is in the linkage to the pump valve or the valve itself. Loose feel on the lever suggests to me that the linkage return spring may have come off somehow. Other possibility may be that the engagement sockets that carry the valve cross arm may have come disengaged.

Take the inspection cover off for the trans. (one with the dipstick on it. Look inside to ensure the ends of the control linkage are engaged on both sides. Also look up top by the lift cylinder for a spring that will connect the linkage to the far end of the cylinder.

If all looks good, the valve may be sticking. Can be cleaned but it's pretty cheap to replace ($30.00).

If you don't have a manual, get one. Lots of good stuff in there and a nice thing to browse through to allow you to better understand how this 60 year old machine works.

Good luck
