Governor Question, maybe bad gas???

Here is the problem. Been cutting grass for the past 5 hours. No problems. Got off the tractor for about a hour. When I cranked it back up the governor seems to be hunting. Full throttle no throttle back and forth. This is with the throttle lever set where it would be at 1600 rpms. The tractor runs just not at constant rpm. I did poor some MMO in the tank, maybe too much? If I pull the choke the tractor smooths out.

What is it?

TIA

Ron

"If I pull the choke the tractor smooths out."

This implies the possibility of a vaccuum leak. Maybe happened when the engine was cooling down?
Manifold gasket?

I agree with Dell - I wouldn't use MMO in the gas.

Fill the tank and dilute the remaining MMO.

If you pour a big slug of MMO into a partial tank of gas, you will lean the mixture by the relative percentage (since the MMO does not ignite effectively but still takes up volume through the carb).

So let's say you start with 2 gallons of gas and add a pint of MMO. This dilutes the air-fuel ratio by 6%. So if you started with a 14:1 air-fuel-ratio, you end up at 15:1. This might be getting close enough to lean mis-fire that you get the "hunting" behavior of the governor, especially as the engine passes through a speed and load range where the carb naturally runs lean.

If you add more gasoline to the tank, you can reduce this effect. Alternatively, try enrichening the main mixture screw on the carb, at least until you use up the MMO.

If this does not help, then do what Dell says.

Many teen age boys learn (the hard way) not to try to "help" their dirt bikes by putting in extra 2 cycle engine oil. Sure, the engine gets more oil, but it also leans out the mixture, and too much leaning burns a hole in the top of the piston.

Ron..... ...while I have great respect for MMO as an "oil conditioner" for sticky rings and valves. I'm not so certain that it is much of a "gasoline treatment" additive.

By pulling your choke, you've enriched your fuel mixture. This would be consistant with crud blocking your jets, and your governor is trying to compensate for low power caused by blocked jets. Sounds like its time to "re-build" your carburator..... ...Dell
