HEY GUYS, I AM CONFUSED. I HAVE LOOKED AT A COUPLE OF 8NS THAT HAD A THREE SPEED TRANSMISSION IN THEM. I THOUGHT THE 8NS ALL CAME WITH A FOUR SPEED. THE GUYS SELLING THE TRACTORS ALL SAID THE SAME THING... IT WAS IN THE TRACTOR WHEN I BOUGHT IT AND AS FAR AS I KNOW ITS THE RIGHT ONE. ANOTHER TOLD ME IT WAS A THREE SPEED SHERMAN. CAN YOU GUYS SHED SOME LIGHT PLEASE???

AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!

My best guess is a 8n with a 9/2n trans. Or a 9/2n painted like a 8n. ???

As Ron said, 9N and 2N had 3 speed trans. To those just getting involved in the world of N's it is sometimes hard to tell the difference between the three (9N 2N 8N) as they look very similar. I could be that the seller is advertising it as an 8N because that's what it "looks like", or it could be as Ron stated, a hybrid tractor built from several piles of spare parts. Here's a site to help differentiate the different versions of N tractors.

Byron,

ALL 9/2Ns came with 3-speed transmissions. ALL 8Ns came with 4-speed transmissions. The tractor(s) which you have looked at were probably what I have--hybrids. My 2N has an early 8N (front-mounted distributor) motor on it. But, it has a three-speed tranny, brakes on either side, harp-style throttle, "hat-rim" hubs on the rear and "big" hubs on the front, and casting identifiers on the rear end that indicate 2N. That's what I call it--2N, because that's what it predominantly is. You can't go by the motor serial # alone--check closer.

Good Luck!

Ron
