Ray..... ...ALL auxillary trannys were DEALER INSTALLED. If the aux tranny shifter lever is up by your left foot, its the more common "Sherman". If the shifter lever is in the 6" round hydraulic dip-stick plate under your right butt, its the rare and fragle "Howard" aux tranny for rototiller work. There were 2 other aux trannys levers that mounted over your right foot, (Park or Hupp).

By and away the most common of all aux trannys was the 3-speed Sherman mounted between your clutch and main tranny, it had what is commonly called a dog-leg shifter lever as opposed to a simple straight lever of the less common O/D or U/D Sherman's. Foward for U/D, aft for O/D and pull out 1" to the left and back for straight through. Interestingly, 1st & O/D is faster than 3rd & U/D..... ...Dell

Dell: It seems right to me that all auxillary transmissions were dealer installed until Ford bought Sherman sometime in late 1950s. Then Ford started putting them in at the factory, primarily in the 641 Fords, and perhaps in other less common 4-speed Fords such as 541s and 741s etc. I've got one that came from a 641 and is now installed in my 841. It was "mined" out of the 641 by a dealer who resold the 641 for strong price; then sold the Sherman to me for $850 (ouch!). I think I have an owners manual (reproduction) that includes all of the 12 speeds or ratios and I presume the original had them too. Mike-Iowa

Personally I think your info was good. I never knew Ford bought out Sherman, and the time frame is of historic value. Sometime people have a bad day!

Mike..... ...ya gonnna be fer splittin' hairs?

The gentleman was enquiring about the aux tranny in his 8N. And then you volunteer that some Ford's had factory installation of Sherman Aux trannys. Then you clarify that somewhat by stating that some of the 641's that were made sometime after 1957-62 had factory installed Sherman aux trannys. Last time I looked 8N's were made from mid 1947-52 and are NOT 641's.

Since it seems so important to you, NEXT TIME should I specify that 641's had factory installed Sherman aux trannys 'specially if he is asking about 8N's?..... ...respectfully, Dell

Yep, I thought he said 8N too. Maybe I was wrong. It's happened before.

Looking at John Smith's web site there is also listed an F&T aux trans. I have a 9N with one and I saw one at the F/FCA show in Missouri last September. I am not familiar with a Park. Where was it made?

Yes, the ford N tractors were available with a 2 speed rear, and it did cut the transmition speed by about half. So It probably was the factory option.
