guys, My father and I restored a 1946 2n a couple of years back, we show it, parade, and have even won several club pulls with it(amazing condidering it isn't souped up). Dad uses it to hog, and for whatever other reasons he can come up with. Question is; will a Sherman over/under slip in easily in place of the Sherman step up that's currently in there? The tractor is already too fast without the extra range (it gets down the road faster than even our JD 70 and IH Super M) a lower range would make it much more practical and I have access to an over/under unit, is it a straight easy swap? Thanx, Pete

Pete,
Just wanted to be sure you were aware that the location of the shifter on the Over or Under is different than the Combination unit. You will have to drill a second hole.

Yep, it's a straight bolt in swap. You will need to drill a new hole for the shifter, though. It's in a different place on the over/under. Have some basic install info at the link below.

Wondering why you so badly need the over-under. Aren't the speeds OK on the low side? Straight 3rd certainly will not outrun the 70 or SM. Only reason I can think of for underdrive is to give a slower reverse than normal. Straight second is about right for most tillage and pto work. However you should buy the over-under for many reasons!

OOPS. I assumed pete had a 8-n,the most common reason for wanting lower reverse. Sorry pete, but I still think it will fit if you wanted to put it in there, now you know where first name come from.

Thanx for the reply! Three reasons; reverse, uniqueness, and pulls!

pete, I would get that combo. in there soon as possible, it sure improves performance, especially backing up. I have one in 8-n & jubilee, worth every cent and minute spent. You may have to drill hole in case for shift lever,as you didn,t mention how you shift your overdrive.Anyway one of the mechanical wizards on this board can fill you in on installation details better than me.
