Ihave a 49 tractor with a 9N motor. I purchased this tractor with an end loader and gannon. I just learned the motor must be replaced due to a crack. A reconditioned short block is 1600. Is this tractor worth $4,000.

We got a few years of light use out of an old tractor with a cracked block , stopleak worked untill hydrolic lock did it in .Dad paid $ 95 for it , we used old horse drawn equipment to pull behind it , carrage plows, harrows, mowing machine, that was back in the 1950`s. Dad said when he was a youngster they used an old Buick to plow with, it had no body and kept burning out clutches every year or two . ( dont know why )

No it isn't worth $6,000. when repaired, which I assume is what you will have in it if you would buy the $1,600. short block. As others have said, where is the crack? Even if the block is not repairable you have the option of buying a bare block and using the parts from your engine to rebuild it with new sleeves, pistons and bearings. Which would give you a virtually new engine. Mabe a few other parts but not many.

The guy I bought two of my tractors from had a spare block. I tried to get him to throw it in on the deal. But he said it was worth $400 and wouldn't do it. I think that was a little high. I can send you his number if you like. You could probably talk him down some. Email me if you are interested.

Your question assumes the tractor is worth $2400 as it sits, and thats not a valid assumption if it has a cracked block.

If thats the only thing wrong with it it is definitely worth the $1600 to fix it. I bet some of these other old boys will find you a way to repair it without replacing the block once they have a better idea about what is cracked.

Not worth $4000 if I were buying it. I would look for a cheaper way out. Maybe a weld job, used engine, or even a substitute of some kind. Just my 2 cents.
