I did an overhaul on the left rear axle on Monday. The seals were leaking. I did new hubs and seals, axle and bearing looked good. Everything worked great. Went together smoothly and after 5 hours of cutting no leaks.

Today I did the right side. I knew the hub was worn and wanted to get it done before the axle was ruined.

I put it all back together went to drive off and the left wheel locked. Upon checking the left wheel will roll anywhere from 1 foot to 10 feet and then locks up (forward or reverse). The right still spins just fine.

When I spin the right wheel sometimes the left will rotate counter to it and other times stands still. When I rotate the left wheel the right stands still. There is no fore and aft movement on either wheel.

What have I done?

Thanks

Ron

Let's look for the simple first. The left brake takes 3 retracting springs and the right 2. Perhaps one of the left is off/broken and the left brake is locking up occasionally. Pull the drum and see what you have. Compare with Fig. F0126 in the manual. If not the brake, post back and we'll dig up more ideas. HTH Steve 8N 169302

It sounds like you have JUST A TOUCH of oil on the left side. A lot of oil and you have no brakes even with a good pedal. A little oil, though, and it gets sticky and these "self energizing brakes " will lock up. To confirm this, does it release when you back up. I usually put a little Oil-Dri (Fullers earth) im the bottom of the drum when I put it on to take up any that comes out of the crevices.

Thanks for the advice. I tore back into it and the brakes do seem to be sticking. I cleaned it well and tried again. Every thing is working GREAT!

Thanks

I recently rebuilt the rear axles and brakes and mine also wants to lock up sometimes and when I back up it releases. Is this caused by some oil in the drum? I have not seen anything to indicate an oil leak and I have not had time to tear into it again. I thought maybe I needed some more brake spring pressure on that side (it's locking up on the right side.
