My friend and neighbor just put his 9-N back together, after replacing the front seal and pan gasket. He said that's all he did. Now he has a knock, sounds like its comeing from the timeing gears...Any thoughts or suggestions would be very much appreciated!!!Thanx Ron.

The length of the bolts that attach the governor to the back of the side timing case cover is critical. The two bolts are not the same. The upper bolt must be the short one, and must not be replaced with a hardware store item. A too-long bolt will hit the back of the timing gear.

The clearance between the oil pickup tube and the crankshaft is also critical. If he accidently bent the pickup tube while installing the (heavy) oil pan, it is possible the crankshaft is striking it, and the sound could "telegraph" to the timing cover area.

It is possible to lose the check "ball" for the oil pressure relief valve in the process of working with the front cover. Hopefully the part isn't rattling around in there. Ask him if the oil pressure is OK.

If he has a fan shroud, one blade of the fan may be hitting it. All the monkeying with the front of the tractor may have messed up the alignment.

Thanks for the flattery, but I feel like I missed something. The timing cover gasket sets the camshaft endplay. You have to do a trial fit-up, then push the camshaft gear forward (through the governor opening) and check the gap between the cam and the block with a feeler guage. Shouilt be .0015 to .004. The FO-4 manual shows this.

I found during my rebuild that the gasket provided in the Tisco overhaul gasket set leaves no endplay at all, and the camshaft was binding against the timing cover. I ended up using two stacked gaskets to get the right clearance.

I don't see how this could cause a "knocking" sound, but the camshaft endplay should be checked whenever the timing cover is removed.
