I currently have 5 acres worth of lawn (thick fescue grass). I use my 8n and a 5' KK finish mower to keep it cut. I want to plow some of it up and plant a garden. Being an X city folk I don't know where to begin. I borrowed a friends kubota w/ tiller and it isn't worth having (no offense to anyone).

What do I need to put behind my 8n? I know a plow, which one or better yet what do I ask for? What else do I need? Do I need a set of disk? I am totally new to this. I want to plan an acre.

Thanks

Ron

Hi Ron-
Not at all OT...that's what this forum is for-N Series Tractor questions. At any rate, the 5' KK is fine as long as you're happy and it does the job. For a small garden, you need a 2-bottom plow to turn over the sod. Then you need a disc harrow to break up the clumps and prepare a seed bed. A few passes with each should do it depending on your soil conditions. A spring shank to level off the field would work. A cultivator to weed and prepare seed bed is nice too. A two row planter if you want to do a large area would work. 8N's were not made for tilling so forget any tiller attachments unless it has the Howard Rotiller and step down tranny, even then be cautious.

A lot of the old Dearborn and Ferguson equipment can be found at local boneyards and most tractor dealers have an assortnment of used equipment. Remember that you can only pull a 2-bottom 12' or 14" or a single 16" plow - do not buy a thre bottom - you don't have the ponies. Disc can be 5. 6. 7. and maybe an 8 ft tandem, lift type. 6 or 7 is fine. Hope this helps some...
