I have a 1949 8n that I just bought. The guy said he had axle bearings put in. There is oil coming out around the center nut. You can also push the wheel from side to side and there is a far amount of movement. Is this normal and how do I stop the leaking?

In addition to what Ron said, it sounds like you might need axles and brake shoes too.

With that much play, I'd suspect that the hub and axle are both worn - you won't know for sure until you look. Get an I&T FO-4 manual - it tells about the axle bearing adjustment shims procedure much better than I can.

When you get it back together you have to tighten that big nut to 450 ft lbs torque. Take the retaining ring off the outside of the nut before you try to undo or tighten it.

You may get lucky but if the brake shoes got oil on them they will need to be replaced if you expect to ever have working brakes.

I have a 49 8N also and if I recall correctly, there are several cork seals and gaskets as well as the main oil seal that rides on the hub flange. And a felt seal around the outside edge of the backing plate to keep out the dust and dirt.

You will have to put new seals in and from the sounds of it, you will have to have new hubs. Make sure you have the manual, pull it apart and see what is needed.
