Guys, Getting the '50 8N back on it's feet, while test driving yesteday, it started to grind a little, sounding like it was coming from the left side axle. While draining the fluid, I pulled the small plug toward the rear of the tractor, and no fluid came out...I stuck my finger in, and moved a bunch of shrapnel out of the way so the fluid could flow out. After draining, I stuck a magnet in and came out with a bunch of grindings and chips, as well as a couple of rollers from a roller bearing (2 different sizes). I assume either a diff case carier bearing and/or drive pinion bearing...sound right? Is this a major surgery? Thanks, Pete

Pete,

Dell and I posted a response to another unfortunate soul this weekend that has bad bearings. I gave him the procedure that I used when I replaced mine last fall. It's back on the 3rd page right now and the subject is : ring gear assembly.

If you have loose rollers things are way bad. They might not be the diff. bearings, might be the pinion carrier and support. Either way it's at least taking off the left trumpet and possibly the split aft of the transmission if you have to remove the pinion.

While you are in there, make sure you look for other bearings that might be bad. Nothing like metal shavings to wreck stuff. Clean out all the gunk while you are there.

Good luck

the ball bearings may be left-overs from previous surgery but its lookie-lookie time. Get your I&T FO-4 manual out and start dissambleing..... ...sorry, Dell
