Looking to get a N series for use around my property. Will be checking out some units at a local dealer. I have never bought a tractor and would like to know what I should be looking for in the way of hydralics, trans, steering, PTO and the like. I have very limited experience with farm machinery but am well aquainted with mechanical things having worked in automotive and construction. Maybe a checklist with some specifics would be a big help. Thanks in advance

Rick-

If you GOTTA have an N, get an 8N with the angle mount distributor, not a 9N or 2N. You gets another forward gear, draft control, and a buncha other goodies.

BUT, realize that their are many other, more versatile tractors available that do more. Match your tractor to your needs, not other way around. If you've ever dug a stuck auger out of a hole because an N spins it in only one direction, you'll know what I mean.

These are fun little tractors, but they do have limitations.

First thing naturally take a look at the oil and tranny fluid. Start it up and let it run a good half hour. Listen for nasty engine and gear box noises. check for excessive play in sterring wheel rebuilding a steering box is expensive 400.00 plus grab the top of the rear wheels and pull in and out to check for hub and bearing wear, cycle hydraulics up and down a few times if you are at a dealer he should have some implements aroun hook one up to the three pint and raise it and shut the PTO off. the implement should not drop. that shows you the condition of hydraulic system. My '49 will hold an implement for about 24 hrs. Beware of new paint and phrases such as rebuilt or restored. Rear tires at least should be at least 60 percent new cause they are expensive too. Cold start oil pressure should start off at 30 to 50 lbs and probably will drop off to about 15 tp 20 at idle as it warms up. Smell the dipstick folks have been known to some gear grease in the crankcase to maintain pressure in a worn engine. Other than that just use common sense. Good luck
