Stubborn sherman shifter

My sherman combo is extremely hard to shift into the "standard" range. Not too bad going from low to high, but is very hard to move the shifter out in order to go into the standard range. Not serious enough to split the tractor, but was wondering if there's a simple solution.

Thanks in advance,

John A

Zane brings us lots of good information and his answer may be the only one. However, both of my Shermans have been overhauled by guys with lots of experience with Shermans and both of the Shermans are are hard to shift into straight drive. I operate in low and high most of the time, unless I am doing PTO work which calls for direct drive to get 540 rpm on the PTO. Mike-Iowa

The Sherman transmission is notorious for the bolts loosening in the transmission and this can cause all sorts of problems with the transmission including being hard to shift.

If the bolts mounting bolts that hold it to the original transmission are loose it requires that the front portion of the transmission be dissasembled in order to access the mounting bolts which are allen head and recessed inside the Sherman housing. A pretty good days work!

Thanks for the reply. Judging from the feel of the shifter, everything is tight inside, although I don't know whether you would be able to feel any play in the shifter if the unit was loose. As I stated earlier, shifting from low to high is ok, the problem is when you try to slide the shifter out for the standard range. Thought maybe (was hoping) the lack of use may have something to do with it.

Thanks again,

John A.

Now I don't have any experience with Shermans, but it sounds like a sticky ball detent. If the spring loaded ball (which keeps the tractor in one gear and out of the others) isn't lubricated, or has run dry, it may be that there is so much effort required to get it to move that it simlpy 'skips' over the middle setting and goes straight into the high or low setting. Could be way off base, but that's my explanation. Also, i don't think there's any way to service these units without splitting the tractor, Seeing as how they are a separate unit from the tranny, and are installed inside of the tractor itself.
