On all Ford tractors made in the USA the rod bearing insert locking tabs go to the left side of the engine.

You can't always go by the numbers because the rod may be a replacement and there are no numbers on a replacement.

Actuall on the N engine it really doesn't make that much difference that I have found whick way the rod is turned but it does make all the difference on Ford V8 engines because the rods may be offset to one side and it they are installed on the wrong side of the engine it will lock the engine. The Rods on the N engine are not offset.

The piston pin is offset to one side slightly on the N engine and most modern engines. This is to allow for a slight onesided push on the power stroke of the engine and if the piston is installed backwards it will result in rapid piston skirt wear and a possible early piston slap.

F04 manual says front or rear. Notch on piston to front of engine. The squirt hole must be to oil the cylinder walls. On any engine I build I always install the notch that locks the rod bearing toward the cam, are if it has a squirt hole to the side toward the cam. This will add some extra oiling for the cam. As a rule I always mark the rod and cap on cam side be for I remove it.

I don't remember what way the oil hole pointed but the stamped number goes toward the cam. Make sure the mark on the top of the piston faces the front. (Radiator end)
