Hi,

I think the problem started a few weeks ago intermitantly. The tractor died while using a grader box, it barely started back up, but wouln't stay running. I tried it later and it ran fine untill a couple of days ago, I was working with the box again, it had been running for an hour or so, it suddenly died and wouldn't start. I checked for spark, none at first, then some, it started running then died, no spark again.

I replaced the coil, still intermittant spark, I checked the point gap, looks ok. what else can it be?

1947 2n, front mount distributor. 12v coil and altenator

thanks

hi,

after changing the points, i noticed that the metal part of my rotor as well as a big chunk of the plastic is missing. maybe it was cracked and it fell off when i took it out. I am going to put a new rotor in it today, hopefully, that will fix it.

Mine did this to me twice. Weak spark, then good spark, run bad, worse, then not at all. Start and run for about 30 sec then quit.

Put a new condenser in it and solved the problem. At least for now

jump switch, if that doesnt work change the ballast resistor

i have 12 volts going to the coil, could the switch or resistor still be bad?

A 12 volt conversion using a 12 volt front mount coil should have battery voltage at the top terminal with key on, engine off and points open. With the points closed you should have a reading between 7.5 and 10 volts (roughly) or you will repeatedly burn out the coil and maybe the condenser.

Even with 12 volts at the coil the key switch could still be bad - jumper around it to test.

Do not use the orginal ballast resistor but get one designed for a 12 volt coil - I used one for a '57 Chevy but there are better choices. A new ballast resistor gets very very hot and will smoke a bit when you first put power to it.
