Hello all,

I haven't been here in a long time. Glad to see all is going well.

I found a gun that I like, Ruger Mini-14 with synthetic stock and SS barrel. I like everything about it...but

I have heard and read conflicting reports on it's accuracy at 100+ yards.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on this gun and it's accuracy?

Thanks a lot.

-Sal

The mini 14 is not your best choice for accuracy (expect 3-4" groups at 100 yards). It is, however very high in reliability. If you're looking for accuracy in a .223 of this configuration, a Colt AR 15 would be a better choice. I have a mini 14 and am quite pleased with it.

Hmmm, and here I thought I was the only closeted gunnut on this board. Mini's are fun guns but not inherently accurate. They can be acceptable to 150-200 yards. If you want to get down to real accurate, get a bolt action.

Check out www.gunbroker.com They are a gun auction site with very active discussion boards.

My two main interests, 8N's and guns.

Thanks guys. I knew there would be a wealth of knowledge here on my gun question.

Someone asked what I was planning on using it for...for several things: varmits and targets and if need be it would come in handy for defending the 8N's.

Thanks.

Sal, you failed to mention what you wanted a Mini-14 for as in Deer hunting, varmits or plinking. I hunted with an AR-15. .223, 55 grain soft point for years and finally gave it up due to the 3200 feet/sec and damage to the deer due to the velocity. A heart shot pulverized the meat within 12" of the wound. Lung shots were better with a fist size hole. Went to a SAR-48, 7.62, 308. This rifle really has the knock down power and highly accurate at any hunting range. A little heavy, but with the right sling, no problem. If your use is varmits and deer hunting try a 243.

Sal, I almost bought one in 223 but heard there were not very accurate so I bought a Remington model 700 in 22-250 and it shoots a 1/2 group at 100 yds. I have a 2-10 Simmons scope on it and it is sighted in at 200 yds, it is 1 & 1/2" high at 100 and 5" inches low at 300. It shoots 4000 ft per second with a 45 gr bullet. Best gun I have ever had for turkey. Jimbo TX

The 22-250 is one of the flatest shooters but also the loudest. Years ago while practicing pistol for the National Matches about 100 yds. from the rifle range I thought a guy was shooting an elephant gun. Went over and found he had a 22-250. I was about to buy one till then.

I'll second the opinion regarding the 22-250! My son received the same rifle as a graduation gift two years ago and in my opinion for flat-line straight out accuracy and hard hitting power this rifle is hard to beat. Despite the calibre's reputation as a varmint level round we have found it to be most effective on whitetail and axis deer as well! And fast.....I think sometimes the bullet gets to the target before the round even goes off..... but that may just be a bit of Texas exaggeration;, ie., my imagination!

This post is a bit off your topic, but I have found that I really enjoy the single shot handguns. I'd like to get a Ruger #1 or one of the Browning singles for a long gun. My deer hunting has been done with a 30-30 Thompson Contender for the past 5 years. It's been great fun. Most all my guns are waaay more accurate than the guy holding 'em!!!

I like guns & hunting, good sport. I collect a few guns as well as Fords and other select antiques. My dad allowed us to put rifle mount on the side of the hood, mainly for groundhogs, the barrel rested in a thick pipe with the end of the pipe filled with aprox. 3 inches of lead in case of misfire. I still have the riffle mount on my 651 workmaster. BURT.

And to think I was afraid to say anything about the pair of gun hooks mounted on the right side of the hood on my 2N..... .hehehe.....many people don't even notice that the left head light is swiveled up and equiped with a spot light bulb instead of a regular headlight lamp. I've done more coon hunting off the back of my 2N ATV then I'm sure the game warden would care to think about! But believe me.....the gun rack was hereditary..... honestly, your honor.....its was already there when I got HERE!!!!!

I shoot Coke Bottles at 100 yards free hand with mine standing. I realy like the Mini-14. I also like my Civilian M1A-M14 with a 4 to 12 power Range Finder Scope on it. I also never had any problems feeding the Mini or having rounds jam. After Market Mags can cause problems do to not being made to Ruger Specs. Great plinkers for shooting. Mark H.

I have a stainless mini-14 with a wood stock. I have pumped thousands of rounds through it with no complaints. I usually never try to shoot longer than 100 yards but at that range, the mini-14 is very accurate. The type of ammo you use will affect accuracy but standardize on one type and you should be OK. I load my own and use a 55 gr jacketed boat tail and that works good for me.

I have a Ruger Mini 14 in .223 calibre w/blued barrel in wood and I wouldn't part with it for anything! I find it to be extremely accurate out to about 200 yards although I should add that I see more innaccurcy due to ammunition then anything else. I have standardized on the Winchester soft-point boat tail load and have had great results. Frankly, I was using a .30 calibre M1 carbine before acquiring this rifle and I found the sharp crack of this rifle quite pleasing compared to that larger calibre's boom!

A mini 14 is a fair rifle, but it is definately not noted for its accuracy, it is well noted for its reliability in feeding rounds without jamming or misfiring. Its accuracy is about par with a 30-30. To really reach out and touch something with a .223 round try out a AR15 in Bushmaster or Olympic Arms, 300 to 500 yards with 1 MOA is easily attainable.

Jumpin jehosephat.....I can't even see out 3-500 yards....much less shoot at something that far away. And I'd think twice about taking the .223 on a rhino hunt! The five shot clip just can't hold enough lead.....now the thirty round clip is another story all together!!! hehehe....but let's face it.....if you can shoot the eye out of gnat with a Swiss 7.5 mm Schmidt-Rueben Mauser you can just as easily do the same with a .22 rimfire....its all in what you're used to!

Lots of people who are interested in olkd tractors and trucks and country are also interested in guns. My great big bet would be that there is a lot of knowledge about guns on this board and I think Sal's post is legitimate. I agree with the feedback he's been given on the Ruger although don't sell short the accuracy of a 30-30.

I've never owned a Mini-14 but I've shot a few of them and the first thing I noted about it was I hated the sights. I could have shot it better with a finishing nail superglued to the muzzle.
Otherwise. If you can stand "barrel light" guns it was fine. I like "barrel heavy" guns like Garands and Springfields. They tend to stay put when you aim them. I never could shoot a Luger worth a darn either. But I was pretty good with a .45.
Guns are a nice diversion from the constant tractor stuff. And I think most Tractor guys are gun guys too. Rich
