My dad and I were disking with our 8N and after a couple loops it would stop running. 30 minutes later it would start up without a hitch.

It would shut off even when idling.

Thanks.
Alvie.

This is an obvious one, but it is sometimes overlooked. Some times, for whatever reason, the gas cap will tend to develop a good seal with the tank opening. When this happens a vacuum is formed and the gas flow stops. You can tell if this is the problem by immediately opening the gas cap when the engine dies. If this was the problem, you will hear the air suck into the tank.

It happened to me shortly after I rebuild the engine. Let me tell you how upset I was when the engine suddenly stopped while doing an extended field test. After the second or third time I figured out what the problem was. What a relief.

Alvie..... .....your early frontmount 8N ignition system has 3 time/heat related engine suddenly stops and after cooling down restarts again. Since you didn't really give any sort of "time" of successfull running except "discing a couple of loops". I will tell you how eazy it is to determine which is your problem.

If it runs for about 1 minute, its the condenser inside the distributor.

If it runs for about 60 minutes and dies, it the frontmount ignition coil insulative tar melting and shorting out some internal turns. When the tar cools, it re-insulates the coil. Usually takes 2+ hrs or overnight to cool off.

If it runs for about 15 minutes and dies, its a gunked up ignition switch. Usually cools off in about 30-60 minutes. This is what your only problem you time frame relates to.

Gee..... . wasn't that fun and interesting to learn..... .....respectfully, Dell
