How does one check the hyd oil level in one with no dipstick? Is there some plug somewhere that you would pull to "fill till it drains"?

I really need to ck ol Smokey's oil level but have found no help in FO4 regarding the tractors with no dipstick.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill, I read your message and went out with my handy dandy 12" steel machinists rule and took some numbers down.
From the end of the D-S to the inside of the little inverted cup was 5 3/16" (Perhaps 1/32 less) The Low mark was 9/16' from the end.
The High range was from 15/16 to 1 5/16" You could make a servicable one from a 5/32 welding rod cut off at about 8 1/2 inches. Bend the loop on the end. Then take a .44 cal shell and cut it off to about 1/2 ' long. drill a 5/32 hole through the primer pocket. Slide the cup onto the stick and solder it at 5 3/16 ( Inside measurement) mark off the low point, then mark the two "full" range marks and you got a new D-S for ole smokey. Good luck Rich

The correct level can be checked by removing the bottom bolt of the inspection cover, where your dipstick is normally located if oil runs out , or nearly so, your level is acceptable.

Bill..... ....how does the local service station or dealer mechanic check your differential oil level? It doesn't have a dipstick. He pulls the fill plug and if nuttin' drips out, he gives it a squirt of diffy oil, till it does dribble out.

Very early production 1939 9N's didn't have a dipstick in the 6" round inspection plate under your right butt, they did have a fill port along side the tranny which you filled to overflowing.

Howsomevers..... you can get a "good guess" by pulling the bottom bolt of your 6" round plate. If nothing dribbles out, your low. Top it off till it dribbles.

But in the big scheme of things, your hydro/tranny holds 5 gals of Ford/New Holland M2C-134D hydro/tranny oil, and can actually work for a short time with only 3 gallons, but I don't recommend it. Most of the 5 gals acts like a heat sink or radiator to assorb hydraulic pump heat. (you knew that pumping oil generates heat, didn't you?) Matter of fact, you spend 8 hrs straddleing that tranny brushoggin', yer gonna get roasty-toastys (grin)..... .....respectfully, Dell

Early 9N's with the aluminum lower steering gear case have a dip stick forward and to the left of the fill cap. I am working on one now repairing threads also the swinging shift guide is shorter preventing use of a later cast iron part.
