Rick,
The TO-30 was made in the USA . The TE series was made in England . The TO is most common in USA but there seem to be a lot of TE series in Canada .

The TO-30 had a Continental Z-129 engine . Look for the casting numbers on the left side of the block just above the oil pan .

I have a 2N and also a TO-30 . The Fergie is heavier and more powerful and parts are pretty readily available at local MF dealer though they tend to be a little higher priced than N parts . On the down side , the blocks tend to crack if overheated but they can be fixed . I seem to be one of the lucky ones as mine is not cracked . Also , there is no position control but you can add a Zane Thang .

Be sure and check for the cracked block ( coolant in oil or oil in radiator ) .

You will really appreciatte the extra power of the engine and the extra weight helps with traction .

Good Luck !

I've owned both, probably would go with the TO30 and a zane thang. The TO has about 28-30 hp and parts are readily available, 'course ain't nothing wrong with the N.

I did the same before buying my 8N. Was told to check if it was made in England. Check serial plate in front of steering wheel (I think). If serial no. begins with "E", don't walk, RUN. Parts are hard to get, at least not as easy as 8n parts. Don't know this for sure, but was told.

Again, I think, the TO30 is a little bigger, had overhead valves and has a little more horsepower than the 8n.

Hope this helps,

John A

Didn't I read somewhere that Fergies have Triumph engines? My 59 TR3A was rated at 105 HP. That should be quite a handfull in the east forty.

Yeah, you'll be in the west forty before you can tromp on the brakes!
