Al..... ....thats funny..... sorry, can't help them giggles. (grin). Heres the deal, firing order should be 1,2,4,3 CCW, and you're saying your Ford 4000 with 172 redtiger engine is 4,3,1,2 CCW. (which is 180 deg off-set) Something more common is mis-wired fireing order of 1,3,4,2 CCW, and then the engine kinda limps along on just 2 cylinders without much power (wonder why?) NOT your case here. Well I can guarentee you that even though the #4 nipple is connected to the #1 sparkie, inside and underneath the distributor cap, the rotor is also pointing to the #4 nipple contact when the #1 piston is TDC. And that is all it takes, sparkie at the right time. How can this be? well.....all side mount distributors can be "miss-installed" because the distributor shaft is rotatable as it is slid down into the camshaft drive gear. And if that happened, the installer could just make everything line up as if there weren't any numbers on the distributor. And he probably did. OR..... .a ham-handed mechanic force-fit the distributor cap 180* on the mounting notches of the distributor body. But he would still have had to "re-wire" the distributor cap nipples as previously described. Howsomevers, a 180* force-fitted distributor cap will probably be loose will give inconsistant timing and cause hard starting. Something you claim does NOT occure. My advice, letterbee. Don't mucka round. Heres the deal, you're not having problems. And most mechanics will grab the #1 sparkie to trigger their ignition timing gun 'cuz its eazier than pullin' a nipple outta the distributor cap..... ....thanks for the grin, Dell
