I was up in the woods cutting up some deadfalls today, and at "some" point the oil breather/filler cap got knocked off. It blew out probably half the oil in the crankcase down to just below the add mark. Naturally I had no motor oil with me so figuring that any oil is better than no oil I poured in a quart or two of bar oil and jammed a stick in the hole to hold it in. What weight is that stuff anyway I maintained 40 to 50# of pressure all the way back to the house about 45 minutes by the time I got the wood loaded and drove back. So I guess a trip to TSC is in order now fer a new breather cap. Is it going to be neccesary to change the filter? I just changed the oil and filter about three weeks ago probably doesn't have 5 hours on it. Would it be ok if I just pulled the filter and let it drain it self for a couple of days?

I use a saw quite a bit here on the farm. If I had to guess the weight of bar oil I would think it's about the same as 80 weight gear oil. As you know, bar oil is really slick and has anti-wear additives in it. With the amount of oil that was already in the engine, two quarts of bar oil should not have hurt anything. The only way it would cause a problem is if you ran the engine for a very long time at high heat which would cause the oil to break down quicker than motor oil. I would simply drain the oil and put in new. As far as the filter goes, if it were me, I would just rinse it out with diesel fuel and reuse the filter. You just don't have that much running time on the filter.

Just below the fill mark is not even close to half of your oil-you would have been better off to have left it alone and capped the filler hole some way to keep dirt from getting in. The filler opening usually breathes so I don't quite understand why it would blow out the oil just because the cap was off. I doubt very much that you have damaged anything however it is probably a very good time to change oil and filter now. Jack

Pitch:
I remember when I was a young Hill Billy Kid in Northern Michigan, driving an old gravel dump truck. Loading the box manually with a #2 shovel.

I knocked an oil line loose and lost the engine oil.
Well I was about 20 miles from town on an old road with no traffic.
I repaired the leak, went to a hole that had water in it and filled the crankcase with water and drove home. We all thought that probably ruined the engine and all the farmer mechanics in town thought so too. Well I drained the water out of the oil pan and refilled with some good Mobil oil and continued to drive the truck for hundreds of gravel hauling trips after that. I sold the truck to a friend and he or I never had any indication that any damage was ever done to that engine.
I can't remember now (about 50 years ago)if it was an old flat head Ford or a OHV Chevrolet but I know it was an old junker that gave a destitute kid an income and just never stopped running.

I would change the oil and filter and hope that there was no damage to the engine. Filter is about 5 bucks, oil about a buck a quart. Last time I checked that was much cheaper than scored bearings....
