I'm having no success at removing my late '52 8N axle oil seals - the inner ones inside the axle trumpets. I been trying to use a slide hammer, but it keeps slipping off. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I feel your pain! I went through this a few weeks ago. I had mine totally mangled with a regular seal puller and was in the process of trying to collapse it with only partial success. That damn thing is strong! I was finally able to grab hold of part of the mangled metal with a vice grip pliers and pry it out. It came out really easily and I wondered why I hadn't tried that earlier. Give it a try.

I used a punch to put a hole in the retainer face. Once this was done used a screwdriver to force it to collapse. Took about 10 minutes per side.

Sharpen a nail set or punch and drive it into the outer edge of the seal to make a hole just a little smaller than a big sheet metal screw. Screw it in the hole and use a pair of vice grips to pull it out.

Or you can do like I do and weld a screw to the slide hammer and then screw it into the hole in the seal and snatch it out.

Do you realize what that little piece of information is worth????? ? If you try it you will know.
