Just stsrted my new rebuilt engine. It had cam bearings and I reused them. Started it and at low idle it has about 10 lbs and middle idle about 25.Will it be hard on the engine with 10 lbs oil presure????? ????? ?THANKS Archie

I rebuilt my 2N engine in 2001. When I was done it ran at 50# hot or cold. It has now settled down to about 40# hot or cold with 30W oil. I would expect more oil pressure than you have given your fresh rebuild.

I would not be concerned about the oil pressure if you had not rebuilt it. I would check the Oil Pressure Relief Valve (large bolt head at top of timing cover) there is a spring and a part that "should have a flat spot on it". As said check your oil gauge. If you did not rebuild your oil pump when you did the engine you may have more work ahead. Although most never replaced, bad cam bearings "can" lower oil pressure a lot. Also hope your oil pick-up tube was tight and gasket good when you re-asembled the engine.

Archie,
The cam journals must have been real bad off for someone to put bushings in them. For solid lifters, oil hot and at idle I would not be concerned with 5psi, on a very well used engine. I know the 3 and 4 cyl Detroit Deisel engine have a min of 3 to 8psi hot at idle. On a fresh rebuild thats a problem, it ain't going to get any better. Here's a little story that happen to Me 22 or so years ago.
I once helped a friend rebuild a 350 Chevy engine because it had low oil pressure, weak and burning oil. He neglected to replace the cam bearings and when we started it, it no longer burned oil, had plenty of power, but only gained a whole 2 pounds of oil pressure. Needless to say we pulled it back out and put cam bearings in it. This was after many days trying to figure out what was wrong, and talking to the right mechanic that asked us a lot of questions on what we done and what we didn't.

Hope this helps.

I have an 8N that starts at 20 cold and drops below 10 warm. When it warms up and idles there is very little pressure. Keep waiting for it to tear-up one summer day while bush hogging in the heat. She just keeps chugging along.

The tractor I rebuilt is similar to the 8N and has 35 pounds when you turn it with the starter. All the bearing clearances and the oil pump need to be right before you can expect like new oil pressure.

An old 8N that I used for 17 years was about like yours, Rusty for the last 10 years I used it. At idle hot it showed almost no pressure at all. It only showed 5 to 7 pounds hot and working under load but it just kept chugging along. Poor old girl finally got so low on compression that she was almost impossible to start and didn't have any power when she did run. A fresh rebuild should have more pressure than the 10 lbs at idle but it might run a long time that way. These old low-rpm engines are amazing.

Archie..... ....10 psi oil pressure on a new rebuilt engine is "not braggin' pressure". Leave alone the pressure loss as the engine oil heats up with use (takes about 1 hr to heat up).

Since there are numerous causes for low oil pressure, and since you declined to share with us any detailed work specifications, it's hard to guess why you seem to have "low oil pressure". What was it BEFORE you did your rebuild? Did you rebuild your oil pump? Did you plastigage your rod and main bearings clearances? What is your confidence factor in your $10 oil gauge accuracy?

Bottom line, yes, I'd be concerned with 10 psi oil pressure, new or old engine..... .....Dell
