If I use POR15 inside my 8N gas tank, need I be concerned that it will plug the small vent hole in the top of the tank? Thanks.

Yes, it will plug up the vent. You can unclog the outer vent hole but no one I know has found a way to unplug the inner hole. There is a diagram in either the FO-4 or the Master Parts Catalog 1939 -53 that shows the vent system.

You will have to use a vented cap after sealing the inside of the tank.

N - joy.

No, that stuff works great for sealing tanks and covering rust. Mark the location of the vent on the outside of the tank and unplug it after the stuff dries. Did my very rusty tank last year with outstanding results. Good Luck

Mike,
Can you give me just a quick run down on how this process is done for cleaning the gas tank. My new purchase has been sitting for a year and a half, and tank is fairly rusty. Is the cleaning treatment readily available? Appreciate any help in advance.

Doyle,

I've used the POR-15 process for several tanks, large and small. It's an air cure epoxy sealer that is used after the tank has been thoroughly cleaned and prepared. Buy the whole kit from POR-15 and follow the instructions closely and you will have a great job.

The kit starts with a good detergent mixed with hot water to clean any old fuel residue. Cover or plug the openings and slosh around many times over a period of time (I think they recommend 1/2 hour, but follow THEIR instructions, not my faulty memory). After rinsing, add their rust kill treatment and slosh around as instructed, then rinse with water.

Then the tank must be completely dried before adding the sealer. I set my tank in the sun for a couple of days, or you can use the warm air discharge from a vacuum cleaner to help - but the inside must be BONE DRY. Then add the sealer and slosh around until all surfaces are covered and drain out excess. It must sit and dry for at least 2 or 3 days before use - I usually wait a week if I can.

Like any good job, the proper preparation is 98% of the job. Follow their instructions and it will work for you.

You can order the product directly from them, local distributors if available, or check your local auto paint store - that's where I get mine.

Good luck on the job. It's pretty much a no brainer, just do it right.

David

Thanks David. Good instructions. Good to know that you can buy it from local paint stores. Thanks again,
Doyle
