Hello,

I got my air filter torn apart and the inlet was packed with oily mud, crude, wasp nests, etc. The wire mesh was extremely clean, it looked basically new! I don't think much air flow or filtration was being done. Is there any type of prefilter that was installed over the inlet, or was the inlet just open to the air filter access door on the hood? I've seen an "air funnel", but I'm not sure if I need this for my tractor or not.

Also, could I use a lawnmower sponge prefilter to wrap around my inlet to help with filtration or will this cause a huge pressure drop or cut off air flow?

The air cleaner is one of the most important things on your tractor.
The way it works is this. The oil in the cup is filled to the full line on the cup. The air comes in down from the top into the center of the cup. This causes some of the air to be pulled up out of the cup into the wire mesh in the upper part of the air cleaner. The larger and heavier particles are driven into the oil by the enertia of their weight. The smaller and lighter particles that manage to make the U turn and don't get caught in the cup must now go try and run the gauntlet of the maze of wire mesh dripping with oil. Not many particles manage to side step all the crooks and turns through the wire and oil. There they stick.
When the tractor is turned off the oil that was sucked up into the wire mesh then runs back down into the oil cup and brings out the smaller particles the cup didn't catch and deposits them in the oil cup.
This is the reason you need to keep the accumulated dirt out of the oil cup. If the cup is half full of dirt their won't be enough oil to be drawn up into the mesh.

From the door in you should have the door 8N-9661, Air cleaner screen 8N-9669, funnel 8N-9684 then your air cleaner. The screen has large wholes so it will not stop much. A pre cleaner was also used as an option. You can find these on e-bay or reproductions through suppliers.

You did not state what tractor you have these are for 8N's. Talk to the supplier a they will walk you through.

My 2 cents hope this helps some

My tractor is an 8n.... The only thing I have is my door and the inlet to the filter. I need to order the funnel and the screen. I'm still planning to use the sponge lawnmower filter soaked in oil as a prefilter. Does anyone see a problem with this?

While motor oil in spounge rudder is better than
nothing, May I suggest you go to your local
motorcycle dealer and get the stuff they use for "recharging" air filters or go to the auto parts store and get the stuff to recharge a K&N
air filter.

Prentice..... .....most lawnmower engines are about 1/8th the size of your tractor engine. (250cc vs 2000cc..... or..... 30ci vs 120ci) So unless your lawnmower engine is the size of a Volkswaggon engine and the filter is designed to flow enuff air for a Volkswaggon engine, yer gonna be chokin' yer N-Engine, really cuttin' down on power and uppin' gasoline consumption. NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!

And if'n ya don't find that the "correct" 8N airfilter parts are to your likeing, then consider finding one of the dealer installed, optional glassjar "Cyclone" pre-filters which sticks out the side of your hood's airfilter door. At least it fits and is the correct airflow size..... ....respectfully, Dell

The sponge filter probably won't hurt anything but I'd be sure to clean it regularly so it doesn't clog up and cut down the airflow too bad. I'd just go with the screen on the outside and check the old oilbath periodically. Good Luck with however you choose to handle it, Lee
