My early 8n has REALLY sloppy steering. You can hold the steering wheel firmly and push the wheels back and forth - a lot. What am I in for?
Thanks. Peter

The early steering units can be adjusted by removing the four bolts around the housings in which the sector arms go through, and rotating the housing until the steering is as tight as it will get. The housing in which the sectors go through are eccentric and therefore give some adjustment, but not much. Make sure that the gasket rotates with the housing so that the bolt holes in the gasket line up. Adjust the sector that is closest to the steering column first, and then the back sector housing. If that does not work to tighten the sectors, you can replace the bushings in the sector housings and that usually will tighen up the sectors even more. If that does not work, then the sectors are worn beyond adjustment. Time to then replace the steering column with the later screw adjustable steering column that contains sectors with the angled sectors. That design is much better. You may need to buy new pitman? arms off of the sectors as the straight arms from the early design will not fit the later design. I don't think you can buy the old straight shaft sectors any longer. Good luck.

First you need to determine where the play is. Is it the box or the tie rods or the wheel bearings/kingpins?

There are two different boxes used depending upon what year your tractor was built. They are similar in many ways but differnt in others.

Grab the steering wheel and try to pull up on it. If it moves much you will need new bearings on the steering shaft. Working on the box is easy but you will have to remove the hood, dash etc to get to it. Once you have it apart you can determine if the sectors etc are worn and need replacing.

I have the early model and after cleaning it out real good and replacing the worn bearings, I filled it with grease and installed a zerk where the fill plug was. A few squirts of grease at each oil change and no problems for many years now.

There is a soft plug (like a freeze plug in the engine) in the bottom of the steering box to allow you to remove the lower bearing race. The steering shaft bearings are a special barrel shaped roller - don't let anyone sell you the nylon ones - only the metal ones will hold up.

N - joy.
