I am gonna replace the Genny in my 1950 sidemount 8n (serial number 283937*) I don't know which one to order. I have heard that there are "A" generators and "B" Generators. What is the difference, and how do I make sure that the Voltage Regulator is correct for the Genny I buy?
Thanks in advance for the help

Dell and Jim both provided good information. I would like to caution you one one problem I have encountered three times. I have received the correct looking generator but it came "B" circuit wired. Also I have received one that had the early 8N brush holder installed, no big deal but had to turn the plate 180 so wiring harness would reach. Seems rebuilders put parts from any early Ford on these things A or B wired. All You have to do is open the end plate and if there is a wire attaching the fields and the end plate (brush holder) you have the correct "A" circuit generator. If it is "B" wired the end plate will have no wires attaching it and it will come off free in your hand. "B" circuit will work with and there is a regulator that will bolt on and look the same but I would not recommend it as the parts mix is too hard to chase in the future. If You buy from a reputable dealer have him check it out WITH the regulator before you install it.

Rob..... ....8N's are "A circuit" gennys and voltage regulators. Your 1950 8N sidemount should use the 20 amp genny 8N-10001 and 8N-10505-C voltage regulator..... ...Dell

the 8N10001LPR (New Holland #) is A circuit, so is the 8N10000BLPR for early 8Ns. the C4NN10002AR (Jubilee and NAA) along with the 12V C4NN10002BR are both 'B' circuit.

good luck
