Tight NAA Crankshaft

I finally broke down and tore apart my NAA engine to re-sleeve it and figured while I'm in there, I might as well get the crank reground since it was worn pretty good. I got the crank back today (0.010 grind) along with a resleeve and bearing kit. I installed the new main bearings, new rear main rope seal, and the ground crank. Unfortunately, after I snug up the rear bearing cap, the crank is very difficult to turn. I suspect it may be interference with the rope seal. Is this normal? If not, how does one go about loosening it up without messing up the sealing abililty? Any help is appreciated!

Get yourself some plastigage and check out the bearing clearences to be sure. Sometimes bearings are wrong and sometimes folks mess up turning cranks. You can also put all of the caps back on without the rope seal in the back and see how things turn.

Thanks Don. I did check the bearings with a Plastigage and they all were within spec. 0.0013/.0016/.0015. Pulled the rope seal out and tried it and everything spins freely. Are there any tricks to putting in this rope seal? Will it eventually loosen up?

I'd break out the gauges and check and make sure that you got the right bearings that correspond with your regrind. Make sure you have them seated correctly, and that there is nothing in the way of them seating properly. Just my 2 cents
