Never had a Ford on the place before so I am very green with my 8N . Where do I find the serial # I can find one on the engine and some numbers on the right side near the steering box but I don't think they are the ones Also the brake drums have oil in them, Is it a big job to replace the wheel seals?..... I like the tractor!!!!! Thanks to any one that can help..STEVE

Steve,

I just repaired an oil soaked left brake on my 8N. The problem I had was removing the hub - the splines had worn. Had to use a 10 ton wheel puller to get the dang thing off! Replaced the Retainer Assembly (A8NN-4248-A) and Gaskets (8N-4225 and A8NN-4251-A (BSN 486753)) along with the hub. I have a '49, so did not have the inner gasket to worry about. Was an easy job, and I'm no mechanic.

The hardest part of replacing the seal is getting tire off\on. Check your hub while you have it off, if it has wear a new seal wont do you any good and you will oil soak another set of brake shoes. good luck.

Congratulations Steve. You will love your 8N. I'm just finishing up my first 8N restoration and have found great help from the members of this forum. Welcome to the group. My answer to your questions re: serial# is: Check the LEFT side of the engine block about center...near the top...just under where the head bolts to the block. You many have to use some degreaser and scrub a bit..but it will be there...stamped in the metal. If yours is an 8N it will probably read like this: *8NXXXXX * I will be interested to know what the number is as that will usually help to confirm the year of your 8N along with some verification of a few other checks. Mine is *8N24342* An early 1948 (Actually manf in Oct. 1947) You may already know that 8Ns models ranged from 1948 to 1952. Regarding the oil on the brake drums I will let other forum members deal with this one...as I did not have that problem. Good Luck with your new N.
