Well I just bought my second N, Sherman Tranny (Combo, a bonus), 1950-52. Thank God somebody 12v converted it right!
I knew it would not go in 1st or 3rd gear when I bought it, was hoping that it was something simple... I removed the transmission cover, cussed at the front center bolt... piddled with all the little thingies that would move... didn't see anything much to worry about except the chocolate milkshake oil/water... determined that the rod (center, front to back) is what would keep the shifter from going into gear. Realizing that there was a little spring towards the rear center of the transmission housing and notches in the rod, pulled the little spring out, being careful not to drop it into the clockworks below... seeing the little round ball looking thing, put the cover back on, it now goes into 1st and 3rd. Although it shifts, it doesn't feel right, no click, obviously... the spring is not forcing the little ball into the little notches. So, I came here... I found only one reference to this... Nope, it didn't answer a thing, just a comment that said, don't loose the little spring and ball.

Finally the questions: 1) Is this common?
2) Is there an easy cure?
3) I've searched the sites for these two little parts, does anyone have them?

Thanks and Best Regards,
Robert.

PS... I'll look at why the PTO won't engage tomorrow, then post questions about it!

The spring and ball are the detent that gives the feel of "in position" when in gear. It is possible that the water in your tranny has rusted the shaft or detent ball to where it has hard action. Spray a little solvent into the spring detent hole and try working the mechanism. It may free up. This is common type stuff when you work on a neglected, run hard, put away wet, or not even put away, 50 yo machine.
