I have an 8N that has been converted to 12 volt. THe electrical system is messed up, and I need a simple wiring diagram, so I can re-wire it. It includes the following components:

alternator
starter
starter switch
ammeter
on light
coil
distributer
battery

THere are only about 12 wires on it, but something is wrong, and I think the wiring is part of it. There is curently only one wire going to the alternator, and I think there should be at least 2, and maybe three.

Any help would be appreciated.

Peter..... ..while the most popular 12 volt conversion uses a 3-wire Delco 10-SI alternator, there is also a 1-wire Delco 10-SI available because some of the internal solid state gutts have been changed.

I'm not a fan of 1-wire Delco conversions because you have to jazz the engine to about 1800 rpms to get it to start charging, while the 3-wire Delco starts charging at about 500 rpms. Remember the N-Engine is suppost to idle at 400 rpms and max rpms is 2200 rpms. 1-wire Delcos are popular for old 6 volt automobile engines and inboard marine engines, all of which run much faster rpms than your old N-Engine.

Your "on light" is usually made of a trailer marker light, because it has built-in wires, and is used like Chevy does as an "idiot light". It is necessary so you can turn your engine off..... ....Dell, who thanks Danny for sharing his 12 volt conversion wiring diagram

A little more info is needed as in what alt you are using and is it front-mount or side-mount dist.

It is a Delco Remy alt. and and front mount dist. I have learned today, that it has been wired for a 1 wire alt setup, and am getting feedback that the one wire is not optimal. So once I get the dang thing running (if I can), I will look into changing that to the conventional 3 wire. The problem right now is I can't get it to fire. Thanks pd
