Is it true that the 8-9-2n's could be started with a manual crank (like a model T) from the front of the tractor? If so, are they rare? Does anyone know of where I could find an old crank? Does anyone have a picture? And does the tractor have to be set up any special way for the crank? Just curious, thanks for any comments!---Rob

If you want to eliminate the battery, I have a good Magneto that came with the 2N that was sold during the 2nd world war with no battery, generator, or starter. The magneto mounts in place of the front mounted generator and extends out and up and looks like a side mount distributor.
I would have to get $150 for the mag.

I have the crank with my 2N. It rides between the manifold and the head, handle to the rear. It has been riding there since new in '46. Back when the ring gear was not so good, it was used all summer. Works good, lasts a long time, makes you tired in a hurry if it decides not to pop right off (especially when it's hot!!!!) duey

I still have the crank rod for my 2N, but I just keep it around for "viewing purposes" only. I have never used it since I decided that I like both of my hands to be connected to my arms. I have heard of some pretty scary stories using those things.

They all can be started with a crank. The 2N didn't have an electric starting system when it first came out during WW II, so it had a choke rod that came through the grille, so it could be choked from the front while cranking. Unless it has been replaced, each tractor has a special crankshaft nut with slots for the crank. To start one with a crank, make sure it's in neutral with switch on. You might have to have a helper pull the choke out as you crank. Give it about 1/4-1/3 open throttle.Turn the engine over slowly to get it on the compression stroke. Then with the crank at the bottom and your thumb NOT WRAPPED AROUND THE HANDLE(lay your thumb beside the 1st knuckle at the base of your index finger), pull sharply up on the crank. These things can kick back and hurt you. You can find a crank on ebay occasionally, or make one from steel rod. A Farmall Super A crank will work. It has to be long enough to clear the radiator(and bumper, if so equipped.)
